AI Sovereignty & Bioeconomy Hackathon. Build for agency.

A one-day October hackathon to build decision tools for data, compute, ventures, skills, standards, and public value.

For years, emerging technologies were judged mainly by technical promise. But real-world value depends on infrastructure, institutions, data governance, standards, and timing.

AI can help make those dependencies visible. It can compare governance choices, surface assumptions, and turn scattered evidence into decisions that institutions can challenge.

So here's the hackathon: use AI to design decision infrastructure for bioeconomy systems that can scale without giving up agency.

The shift

The hard part is not only adopting AI. It is keeping agency over the system around it.

45 builders, in teams of four or five, spend one day turning a digital sovereignty question into a decision tool for the GAEIA/Strathmore Innovation Platform. If you can name the decision, you can build something useful.

The bioeconomy is the concrete lens: data, compute, skills, standards, venture pathways, and public value all meet in one system.

  1. 10:00 – 10:30

    Opening & Challenge Brief

    Frame the central question: how can AI-enabled bioeconomy innovation scale while preserving agency over data, infrastructure, standards, and public value?

  2. 10:30 – 13:30

    Stakeholder & Dependency Mapping

    Choose one stakeholder and one decision. Map the external dependencies, value flows, institutional constraints, and risks.

  3. 13:30 – 14:00

    Expert Feedback

    Stress-test the problem framing with mentors from AI governance, bioeconomy, venture creation, policy, and infrastructure.

  4. 14:00 – 15:00

    Working Lunch

    Regroup, choose the sharpest decision question, and remove anything that does not help answer it.

  5. 15:00 – 18:00

    Decision Tool Build

    Turn the analysis into a dashboard, policy brief, readiness scorecard, governance canvas, or ecosystem map.

  6. 18:00 – 19:30

    Final Demos & Jury Review

    Present the tool, the decision it supports, the evidence behind it, and the next step an institution could take.

Make the work usable

End with a prototype, framework, ecosystem map, policy brief, or workshop format that someone can act on after the hackathon.
